[Professor James Godley] had asserted that within limits a word can be
applied to different particulars, but still have an invariable meaning.
Thus, one can make a "friend" of a multiplicity of human beings--though not
of a kangaroo. Professor Daube replied, "Perhaps in staid Berkeley, a
sincere and lasting friendship with a kangaroo is beyond the pale, but in
San Francisco, where I live, it is regarded as entirely normal."
