i wonder whether the fact that wkcr.org has been offline for the last few days
is related to Max Roach dying.

Phil Shapp dj's on WKCR probably more than 20 hours a week and
he was incredibly tight with Max Roach. He calls his programs Max
Roach Radio and has many times interviewed him (and replayed the
interviews). He does Bird Flight every weekday morning where he
minutely examines every surviving recording of Charlie Parker leaving
out no scrap of information and anecdote. His jazz erudition is beyond
obsessive.

He is close enough to know that Max Roach was in the hospital
(not identified in the obits). The radio may be off the air just to give
Shapp a chance to collect himself.

Shapp announces the times of every visitation of every jazz musician
in the New York area that dies.

Max Roach lived in Queens NY and Shapp was wont to raise his voice
from time to time and cry out 'Hi Max!'

Yesterday afternoon I drove into town listening to XM radio. They played one Max record after another. A couple of them were tracks that I had not heard before, incredible mastery of the independence factor (each limb playing a different line).

I feel like I lost an uncle, someone who was very supportive of me in my youth, a high standard to compare all others with. But on the other hand he is just the latest of my early heroes to pass on. I guess that as we age our ability to handle the deaths of others grows easier. What the hell, I will outlive most all of them, and yet the music goes on. In the final analysis I am glad that I was born at a time when the music was being formed and great artists were emerging to show the way...and that for a few years, in the backwoods of Texas in little joints with others of similar mind, I played it too and helped to spread the beauty.
