Good news from the Gila
A woman from South Carolina, in her 50's by the looks of the photo in the local Post Office, came here for a planned 2 week wilderness hike during the Christmas Holidays. The weather was not extreme and she was experienced in the wilderness. But after 3 weeks she had not returned and her friends went into a panic mode. Search parties went looking but came home empty, not a clue. Her picture was posted all over the county.
Then last weekend a couple of college boys on a weekend hike spotted her, crawling and waving on the other side of the river. They gave her aid and summoned help. A chopper came in and saved her. She had been in the wilderness for 5 weeks. Her rescue came on the verge of serious bad weather, it was -3DF in my backyard last night, colder up high where she was. Good timing.
Not many details of the story are available yet. I will check with Virginia, the Post Mistress, tomorrow and she will likely have all the latest news, she always does. The story in circulation is that after completing her camping, she could not get back across the river, swollen by rains and snow melts upstream. The river is high, alright, but it rises and falls rapidly this time of year, but it's not very wide...enough second guessing...the good news is that she will be fine and that she will be slim and not likely to hike alone again.
