[AGL] Ramsey Lewis, Dave Brubeck

Thanks Font,
I've heard of Randy Jones but not Michael Moore (surely not THAT Michael Moore). Bobby Militello is a great talent. He did some recordings with Maynard on baritone that had the whole jazz world shaking...didn't realize he was still at it and playing smaller horns...

I recently bought some DVD's from a source called Jazz Icons...amazon. They were recorded as TV shows in Scandinavia in the '50's and '60's, recently discovered and released after remastering. The sound is not so hot but the video is quite good. Who? Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (Lee Morgan and Benny Golson), Dizzy with Sonny Stitt and a European big band, Thelonious' 1966 group, and the '62 Count Basie Band featuring Sonny Payne on drums. Timeless stuff, nicely packaged, a work of love from someone with good taste. I especially like the Art Blakey set. There are a couple of others in the series which I will get later.

Gosh, live jazz by masters is an experience I haven't had for some time. I get the promos from Jazz at Lincoln Center. They used to archive the concerts and you could download them but it looks like they have stopped doing that. Not likely that I will ever visit NYC again but if I do I will have to check out Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, a state of the art jazz room that is part of the Lincoln Center complex.

And the drummer was Randy Jones, the bass was Michael Moore. So far, the PBS site is the best... has the most about DB....

Gerry,

This is one of the reasons I got back on Mikes list. I can always count on you to pull something delightful and knowledgeable out of your head about music.

The saxaphonist was Bobby Militello - BIG man. I was more worried about him having a stroke than I was about Brubeck. But he was good.
