Somehow I missed Gerry's food-growing-hands, not a bad sermonette...
I take issue with this:

Suppose they used a enough pesticide to kill the bug that made the first few bites? Could that be why there is such limited damage? Most shoppers opt for no insect breach of the fruit and vegetable covering what so ever. That's where other microoranisms enter to begin the rotting.
Washing reduces the amount of applied pesticide and cooking neutralizes the presence of micro-organisms. Both have their place in food preparation. The downside of bagged salads is that they are uncooked. Nobody reportedly got sick from eating cooked spinach.
