Frances, Brady, and all:

I've been trying to remember for a minute, that is,
years, how many "apartments" made up "the Ghetto." 
When I lived there, one of the ever-changing
configurations was John Clay and his banjo upstairs in
the "front" apartment with his own outside staircase;
below him Ted and his sweet wife (name? uh oh, a
senior moment again--Mary Margaret?) and their
peyote-eating dog below; downstairs in the back Powell
St. John and Steve Porterfield; and upstairs with our
own private indoor staircase that went straight up to
a door, Jack Smith, my brother Tom, and me.

Yet somehow I have believed for years there were five
apartments. I also remember a frame house in the
front that at one point Joe Brown had control of
enough to throw a party there. This would be
somewhere in the 1962-1964 era.

Many other half-elusive memory images and weird
egvents. Hershberger lived next door in a little
house that May still be there. I had occasion last
winter to visit the frat house that now and forever
squats broodingly next door to the Carrels and there
was a little house in the back but I remember there
being two or maybe three. 

Ah well.

Seemed like there were almost always constantly at
least twice as many people in our "pad" than lived
there.

Once I decided for some strange reason to "mop" the
"floor" Yes! Wali Working! the hardwood ancient
floor. I was leisurely swishing the mop back and
forth when Janis J walked in.

"Shit! What are you doing?! Gimme that!"

Janis grabs the mop and begins swabbing the deck
vigorously like some sailor. "This is how you mop the
damn floor. Shit man!" she sweetly proclaimed.

So what's up Frances? I don't get into town much but
if I understand correctly, Brady and whatsername and
the charming whosis (senior moments again) will be
entertaining the grease chompers at Dirty's Kum-Bak
Hamburgers this Friday. If I'm in the neighborhood
I'll definitely drop by.
