Thanks for checking on Carol and family. How wonderful, a new grandchild.
Randy has managed to score a bicycle for the rest of his 10-day stay there (full JazzFest), making exploratory tours of all regions of the City much easier. When he calls today, I'll ask him to check on Marie's grave - but yesterday he said that NO tourism seems to be up and running just fine with the usual graveyard tours, voodoo tours and now the new 'destruction' tours. He also said that it appeared that the Ponchatrain causeway was open, thus transportation between Carol and RL's barn and the City is established. My guess then is that RL is officing again in NO serving the big Shell Oil corporate office presence there.

Speaking of voodoo, does anyone know the condition of Marie Laveaux's (sp?) grave. Very special woman, Marie.
Speaking of special women, has anyone had any contact at all with Carol Londot?

Mike,
The NO Jazzfest concerts was a report from Randy. I guess it was not too clear in my post. I'm not there, but he calls daily with briefings.
He says that NO is definitely different. The French Quarter is just fine, but lacks the cheap labor of bus boys. So, service is mightly slow, and a table at one of the local joints Sunday night was a 2.5-hour wait. Bourbon Street has more titty bars, and he spotted a latino, as well as an asian gang. Some locals he met in a bar off-handedly said that the NO 'riff-raff' gotten taken away - and the voodoos are gone, whatever that means. Local news fills their hour with stories like families living in leaky FEMA tents.
He noticed a striking increase in the number of bicyclists. The bicycle seems to be a very efficient way to get around these days. Some of the houses in areas near the FQ have a new paint job and looking good, some are marked with spray paint to be uninhabitable. He hasn't ventured too far out yet, but has a few days this week to explore.
He was really impressed with the spirit of Springsteens effort to be a protest singer. I don't really care how they sound (scream), as long as they are sincere and lots of people listen.
Oh yea, the little Redstarts (lots of them) were cute with their fan tails flashing as they dug for berries or bugs circling round a branch. The female is more yellow or buff than the redder male. Black and whites I spotted scaling up and down tree branches and trunks - easy to spot. Someone also pointed out a Northern Waterthrush - in the water another first for me. They said that 70% of the birds would be gone the next day because the wind was coming from the south, and there is not all that much food source in these little woodsy scrubs near the beach.
