That's one of two themes for this year's Fotofest, and it's an emotional downer. The other is The Earth.

Friday, at Fotofest opening, we saw a short, very poignant 3-minute arty film by Alfredo Jaar about Kevin Carter, the photographer, Carter's career, 1994 pulitzer prize winning photo, and his subsequent suicide due to the abject sadness of life in the world that he had personally witnessed and captured in pictures as an international photographer.

here is a web site of the story with that 1994 photo - warning - it is sad.

Alfredo Jaar is a Chilean artist living in NYC. There is a web site of his art. His films are black screens, with white courier typeface words that sort of sear a concise message into the viewers' brain. Simple and stark.
