Clark,

There was a Jewish deli right here in Austin in ghetto daze.
It was on Congress around 9th street. I dont remember the
name, i think it was the Manhattan Delicatessen but that might
be wrong. The food and ambiance was totally horrible, it was
like going to the cheapest Chinese restaurant in old downtown
San Antonio.

Terrible jewish delicatessens seem to be a tradition in Austin.
Katz's has just celebrated its 25th anniversary. They serve
pure swill. I have always believed that Katz's was part of a jewish
plot to poison the goyim.

On the other hand, there was a Cuban jewish family that ran
a bagel bakery and restaurant on W 5th just east of Guadaloupe
for many years now gone. The ambience was seriously down
market but the bagels were authentic.

There was a large Alfred's in the village about a block and a half east of
Kirby, which I thought was the original Alfred's. It shut down sometime
after West University completely Yuppified. Hell I was an Austin boy who
thought Delis were only on TV and in New York. After finding one in San
Antonio and Alfred's in Houston, I knew Texas had a lot of class. Probably
had my first Lox and cream cheese bagel at the San Antonio Deli
