You will remember reading her first book about Jimmy
Swaggert.

I for 1 actually met Madelyn. I was friends with Liz
Katerle a producer of tv documentaries at Channel
9 and she took me with her on a visit to Madelyn's
office. I was introduced and shook hands but didn't
get any real face to face time with M because she was
having a family crisis with a husband or ex-husband
or whatever.

She had quite a bit of presence though. Most of all
I was struck by her extremely plummy accent, that
of Maryland old families. That accent in and of
itself can be quite a big helping hand in the world.

On a related subject I found Naipaul's latest novel
at the library Magic Seeds. He has apparently read
Sir Vidia's Shadow and if i read him aright he is
conceding in Paul Theroux's opinion (expressed
in Theroux's biography of Naipaul) that his, Naipaul's,
second wife is/was quite common.

Naipaul gets off some superb one-liners. For
example, "But I expected better of someone who
had married me."
