Shiping News I believe was made into ta movie, it was a great book. Have you read "The Time it Never Rained"? about the Texas drought of the fifties. I actually like the Three Stooges and the Little Rascals. Very silly movies. The men in skirts movie era is upon us. The Trojan War as fought by Brad Pitt was pretty interesting, they evidently didn't pay much attention to the book.
Oh well.....

Bubba, et al,
At the risk of encouraging movie talk, a sinister enemy which dominates the
cultural landscape of this country to a degree that I find alarming, I will
comment on this recent thread.

I watched "Bird" only last week, with my jazz students. I first saw it
shortly after its release. IMHO it is not a good movie nor a good
characterization of the life of Charlie Parker. On the other hand it is an
honest if failed attempt to spread the legend of a special hero of mine and
I applaud Mr. Eastwood for having the balls to make it. Whitaker was a poor
choice to play Charlie Parker, not the he can't act but that he did not
"get" the character. On the other hand, the Black actors who might have done
a better job would have had to gain 50 pounds for the role, a task they
would likely have resisted. Bird was a heavy dude, a monstrous force in
American music, an all-time genius hall-of-famer.

I thought "The Unforgiven" was great.

Clint was tight with Ray Charles. He is a real fan of blues piano masters
and plays some decent box himself. Maybe he will attempt "The Ray Charles
Story" one day, or "The Pinetop Perkins Story".

Summer reading has included "Cold Mountain" and recently watched that movie
(DVD) as well (2 movies in one month! I must be weakening). Not as good as
the book but not bad, a decent job by all. A memorable tale by a first time
novelist, there is hope for all of us.

Best book so far this summer was "The Shipping News" by Annie Proulx, one of
the best American writers I know about. Don't know if they've made a movie
of it. It made me want to live near the sea again, an idea which is
germinating in my mind.

Katherine Boo is at it again in the New Yorker (July 5 edition) with "The
Best Job in Town". This is a long piece investigating the phenomena of
"outsourcing" of jobs to India and the impact upon the natives there. She is
a wonder, one of the best journalists working today. I'd like to hug her.
They won't be making any movies of her work but it should be required
reading.
