Connie-- It's really hard to imagine why Bush (or anybody) would have much
trouble pronouncing these words. The are basically phonetic representations
(based on the sounds of Arabic words) using our own alphabet. It's easy to
pronounce "Abu Ghraib" because it's pronounced just as it is written/spelled
in English. All Bush has to do is look at the teleprompter. If he can't
pronounce the two words it may because he can't read that well and doesn't
understand phonemes. It could also be a sign that these two little words
(and their signified concept/ related images) represent for him such an
enormous pain in the ass that he goes linguistically ballistic whenever he
is forced to utter them. I do believe the man needs remedial instruction and
some serious therapy. He'll have plenty of time for that after the November
election!

pronouncing it too. I can get it right, if I don't look at the words.)

>President Bush (news - web sites) seems to have inordinate difficulty
pronouncing the name of Abu Ghraib, the infamous prison in Iraq (news - web
sites) that has been home to Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s atrocities
and U.S.-sanctioned abuse. Though the correct pronunciation is "abu
grayb," with a slightly guttural g, Bush last week referred to the
prison as "Abu Gareff." At a speech this spring at the Army War
College, Bush pronounced Abu Ghraib three ways. Reuters described them as
"abugah-rayp," "abu-garon" and "abu-garah,"
but your correspondent distinctly heard "abu-garom."
