<DIV>Dateline: Fotofest 2004 Houston</DIV>
<DIV>Tenth International Biennial of Photography and Photo-Related Art</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>I take lunch breaks dashing over to one of the many photo exhibits around town.&nbsp; All have been well worth it, but today was so good.</DIV>
<DIV>Video art, 'Riverglass' by Andrej Zdravic, 1997 (at fotofest headquarters on Vine Street).&nbsp; a 20 minute video&nbsp;of the world's cleanest river (said to be), Soca river in Slovenia.&nbsp; A revelation of art as the camera eye was in and around the water, rocks and leaves, color, light, movement, very pleasing. But it was also&nbsp;wonderful to see what a really clean river would look like up 'watery' close.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Elsewhere on display:</DIV>
<DIV>"Shorelines" by Susan Derges, of England where the artist&nbsp;lays large photo paper on the beach at night, and as the waves wash over the paper, she flashes it from atop a ladder.&nbsp; Very interesting results, including color mixes from moonlight and other artificial light sources.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>"Shipbreaking" by Edward Burtynsky. large, full-color photos taken in Bangladesh of workers dismantling oil tankers&nbsp;with hand tools, for metal recycling.&nbsp; The tankers are driven full-throttle from the ocean onto the beach where the shipbreaking takes place. The resulting photo essay is of massive rusty metal constructions with&nbsp;small turbaned and barefooted indians climbing around on them.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>"O Caminho das aguas" by Valdir Cruz.&nbsp; Waterfalls in Brazil, 2002, sometimes regarded as the 8th wonder of the world, spilling down over cliffs as high as 24 stories. Silver gelatin, platinum and palladium prints.</DIV>
<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV>
<DIV>Show ends, April 12.</DIV>
<DIV>
<DIV>I scanned photos from catalog, but don't know if they will come off well as attachments. Will try to send one.</DIV>
