i live in eugene oregon, and as i recall every west coast electric utility
had rate increases, as a result of the electrical fiasco in california that
enron has been accused of perpretrating. that gridlock, or whatever is was ,
caused everything to resonate down the line, the aluminum factories sold
their contractual electricty back to the bpa at a profit, (i don't remember
if the factories were even running then, but if they were that created
unemployment) anyway many of us continue to be directly affected by the
higher electricity rates , so the question is, when the enron executives are
convicted can damages suits be filled against them in a class action sort of
way ??

Oy, I completely agree with the "decency" problem. Most of this "soft-porn"
shit is simply there to titilate the teenage to mid-20s male demographic
(for beer, car, etc. sales). Sex is great, even sex on the screen but in
most instances it is completely gratuitous and banal. (Close shot of heaving
male buttocks, close shot of woman's mouth with accompanying ooohs and
ahhhs. Borrrrrrriing!) Usually has little to do with the story, or nothing
that couldn't be simply referred to (over coffee the next morning,
etc.etc.) but more to do with who is the current "hot chick" and will she
(read: Halle Barry/et al) take off her clothes? Pant. Pant. Uch.
If you want to read something about historical parallels, look at the Roman
Historians, especially Tacitus and others writing about the "Silver Age".
Rome began as a pretty Puritanicall and very Matriachal society and then,
with its incredible growth and ascension, began to lose it's own "moral
center". Claudius writes about this. (Check out the wonderful BBC series
I, Claudius with Derek Jacoby, et al.)
It is much easier to rail against tits and gay marriage than to look at the
real obscenities like destruction of the environment, our children's future
or lack of medical care...from infants to elderly. Disgusting.
Spring is beginning to show promise here. How are things in Austin?

Thanks for setting me straight on Zell, I do agree that there is a decency
deficit, though. I think the news and entertainment industry in America is
on a slippery slope to low taste with downright porn overtones, ie. prime
time programming. Some of the scripted stuff is salacious--filled with
double entendes and sexual innuendo. It is like the Ranger highjinks way
back when, seeing what can be gotten away with, but the Ranger was so tame
and innocent by comparison. I guess it was the line about "silence is not
golden, it is yellow" that got me on board. That is certainly the way I feel
about much of the poop that the administration is dishing out.
Hope you and Honor are well,
Frances
