Really? I recently checked out one of the volumes of Proust's
novel.
Interestingly (to me), I was rather put off by it. The most
offensive was the numbers he does on Albertine the
servant regarding her general ignorance, superstitions
and her mangling of French. His high and
mighty attitude towards her reveals a heartless
snobbery. His snobby/snotty attitude towards many
others who socialized with his family is likewise
offputting.
I had better memories of reading him in English.
Reading him in the original forced me to a surprising
reversal of my opinion of the writer.
it is inneresting that Jon Ford & Carolyn Garner
(and husband John Siscoe?) are or will soon be
in Paris. Gilbert is in the phone book and I
am SURE that he would love to hear from them.
The corklined room IS the original room P wrote
his big novel in. the cork is not original and
was paid for by the Societe des Amis de Marcel Proust.
the blvd Hausseman it looks on was noisy then and
it still is.
