Mike.  I am sorry that you are still so misinformed about critical dates, 
what with you being a Classical scholar and all.  Recent evidence is that the 
bicycle was actually invented by the Macedonian philosopher Hystericlitus in 
the 4th C. BC.  It (peddling around the village and scaring the horses) was 
considered a sacrilege and a safety nuisance by the villagers who burned him 
alive on a framework made of parchment stretched between four wooden slats 
that local school boys had been using for graffiti.  It wasn't until many 
centuries later that either invention was re-discovered by Leonardo di Caprio 
of Malta, called the Falcon, by some.
