We are going to begin our ceremony today in my garden. This will be one of
many teachings the grandmothers will give my granddaughters. I thought I
would pass it on to you, my friends, just because.
Love,
Grandmother Carol
MOONTIME WISDOM
September 23, 2001
The garden is a place of growing things,
of sacred things, of mysterious things.
In the garden we meet our Creator; we find our source of life.
In the garden we learn who we really are.
We cannot be in right relationship with ourselves
If we're not in right relationship with the Earth.
In the garden we learn that it's not we that grow the food,
But the earth that grows the food
through a powerful and mysterious life force.
That life force is in us too.
In the garden we learn that we're not the center of everything;
we're merely a part of a beautiful web of life
where everything depends on everything else,
and that's ok.
A famous person, Ralph Waldo Emerson,
said that "God laughs in flowers."
In the garden God tickles us.
The garden teaches us to celebrate.
In the garden we learn that everything that grows comes from the soil.
The soil must be carefully prepared.
Seeds are planted. Then we wait. The garden teaches us to wait.
The seed becomes a seedling, then a plant.
The plant produces flowers and then fruit and vegetables.
Like the plants, you came from a seed
and you have the seeds of your children within you.
Like the plants, you get to become mothers and give life to others.
The garden helps us to understand what it means to be women.
The moon effects the way that plants grow.
It effects us the way we grow too.
Sometimes the moon makes us feel
like we want someone very special
To come into our lives and start a seed growing in us.
Like the plants, you are about to flower now.
Look to the garden for wisdom, for it has much to teach you.
In the garden we learn about rhythms and cycles.
Your body has rhythms and cycles too.
In the garden we learn that some things have to die
To make room for other things to have their turn to grow,
And that's ok.
In the garden we learn that everything, even the soil,
Needs a time to rest and gather strength.
Your moontime is a special time of rest for you.
In the garden we learn that when we take from the earth
We have to give back to it.
It's the same way with people.
In the garden we learn about generosity.
The earth gives us so much food!
We must also be generous in the way that we live,
And we must always remember to give thanks
To the Creator for life -
Life outside of us, and life inside of us;
Life in the past and in the present
And in the future -
In the sacred seeds that we carry within us.
