Just got a phone call from Chester out in SF, re my rant 7+ which I
forwarded to him for input on who suggested idea for name "Rolling Stone."
Turns out there had been a series of meetings on a new, hip mag among
Haight-Ashbury creative people--Gabe Katz in particular (Gabe being art
director for newspaper SF Oracle). Chet knew Jann & thought he was a "pal"
so he was invited into the discussion group; Chet thought the mag should be
called "Straight Arrow." So then JW drops out of sight for awhile, and the
next thing CH knows, there's a mag called Rolling Stone on the stands! JW
even ripped off the name Straight Arrow for his publishing empire, with not
even a thank-you to Chet. Sort of the Bill Graham of the hip publishing
world--more or less what Louis Black thinks he is on the Austin Scene, eh?
Chet surmises that JW chose name Rolling Stone because of the Dylan song, as
he worshipped Dylan--like most everybody in doze daze.
Chet doesn't want to be a subscriber because trying to correct
misinformation is like "punching a tarbaby." You just become stuck faster
with every swing. Makes sense to me... even tho I'm still trying to suck
him in. Meanwhile, Jon, why don't you try to talk Travis Rivers into
subscribing? And who's in contact with Wali/Wally Stopher nowdays? We got
to get these guys on board the Ol' Ghetto Train!! jaxon
