courageous souls? w/god on their side

The young women who were captured for preaching jesus to the masses are
rather annoying, to be sure. I saw a young fundamentalist fellow from North
Carolina profiled a couple of weeks ago on some TV news show who reminded me
of the best kind of Peace Corps-style community service types; he was living
in the mountainous, desert-like Northern Alliance controlled area, under
constant attack from the Taliban, and he was doing a sort of "work for food"
deal--distributing grain rations to those who pitched in and rebuilt bombed
out houses, or crafted new ones along the ancient mud-hut style (with a few
little improvements thrown in). He came across as an idealistic youth,
really smart, and one who had totally merged with the culture, even dressing
in the local garb and growing a large beard. Maybe he was a little wacky,
but he seemed sincere, useful, and the people seemed to love him. As for his
religion, he remarked that everybody knew he was for Jesus, but he didn't
preach about it-- he was just there to help out.
