This latest set of updates truly reveals that many plans are extremely high priced and that users of those plans would be well served by switching to almost any other plan! If you haven't checked your bill carefully lately we suggest doing so to figure out what you are really paying - particularly for calls within your own state. Many of the rate disclosures on the long distance company websites neglect to show you your true intrastate rate. Be careful! --------------------------- In this newsletter --------------------------- 1) Unitel lowers some international rates 2) LDDirect and Powernet Global increase USF from 7.94 to 9.9% 3) PT-1 10-16-868 dial-around increases USF to 8.5% 4) Qwest 10-10-432 dial-around increases USF to 9.9% 5) Excel raises USF fees on residential plans 6) Excel raises monthly fee on Dime Deal 2000 7) Excel raises USF fee on Prime Business Flat Rate and lowers low usage penalty 8) New Coverage: AT&T 60 Monthly Minutes 9) New Coverage: MCI Select 200 10) New Coverage/Warning: MCI Casual (10-10-222) 11) New Coverage/Warning: Sprint Casual (10-10-333) 12) New Coverage: Sprint Standard Weekend 13) AT&T raises rates on 10 Cents Saturday Basic and 10 Cents Sunday Basic 14) MCI raises evening and Saturday rates on Basic calling plan 15) Warning: MCI raises calling card rates 16) Warning: MCI and Sprint add $1.50 fee to all bills received through local phone company 17) Tell a friend about ABTolls - you can win $10,000 and other prizes 18) Newsletter archives +------------------------------------------------------------------+ Discounted European Rail Travel: http://flyaow.com/raileurope.htm +------------------------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1) Unitel lowers some international rates ------------------------------------------------------------------ Unitel has announced lower base rates for calls to certain countries including Israel at 9.5 cents a minute. Please note that as with many carriers calls to mobile phones in international destinations may be assessed a high surcharge. Please verify rates with the carrier prior to making calls to mobile phones in other countries. The Unitel 4.5 plan offers an interstate base rate of 4.5 cents a minute within the Continental U.S. Calls within your state vary by state, and in some states are quite good, while in others they are less so. We suggest you verify your intrastate rate prior to switching if you make calls in your state. We list all of the Unitel intrastate rates on the Unitel page at http://abtolls.com/plans/Unitel4.5.html The Unitel plan has a $2 monthly fee which is waived in any month that you make $15 worth of calls. Calls are billed in 6 second increments with an 18 second minimum. Full details of the Unitel offer can be found at: http://abtolls.com/plans/Unitel4.5.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2) LDDirect and Powernet Global increase USF from 7.94 to 9.9% ------------------------------------------------------------------ LDDirect and Powernet Global (PNG) have increased their USF from 7.94% to 9.9% of interstate and international calls. LDDirect offers a 4.9 cent interstate base rate within the Continental U.S. and some attractive intrastate rates in certain states (for instance 3.9 cents in California), and some non-attractive intrastate rates in others. Check carefully before signing up for your state. Calls are billed in 6 second increments with a minimum call length of 30 seconds. They charge a $2.50 monthly fee, which is waived in any month your call volume is above $15. Full details of the LDDirect offer can be found at: http://abtolls.com/plans/LDDirect4.9.html PNG offers a 4.5 cent interstate base rate within the Continental U.S. and intrastate rates that vary from average to expensive. Check the intrastate rate carefully before signing up. Calls are billed in 1 minute increments. They charge a monthly fee of $2.50 which is waived in months where your call volume is above $15. For those that make a lot of short calls they offer a similar plan with 30 second minimum call length and 6 second billing increments but raise the interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. to 4.9 cents a minute. Full details of the PNG 4.5 plan can be found at: http://abtolls.com/plans/PowerNetGlobal4.5.html Full details of the PNG 4.9 plan can be found at: http://abtolls.com/plans/PowerNetGlobal4.9-6SecondBilling.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3) PT-1 10-16-868 dial-around increases USF to 8.5% ------------------------------------------------------------------ PT-1 has increased its USF to 8.5%. Their dial-around offers an interstate base rate of 7.9 cents a minute within the Continental U.S. The intrastate rates vary widely with some being attractive and others being expensive. The dial-around is only available in parts of AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, IL, MA, MD, MI, NJ, NV, NY, OR, PA, RI, TX, VA, WA, and WV. The plan offers some decent international rates in certain traditionally expensive markets such as $1.07 a minute to Afghanistan 37.97 cents a minute to the Philippines. Full details can be found at: http://abtolls.com/plans/PT-1Dialaround(10-16-868).html To find the lowest rates to the countries you call most, check out our international rates pages at: http://abtolls.com/intrates.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4) Qwest 10-10-432 dial-around increases USF to 9.9% ------------------------------------------------------------------ Qwest has increased the USF on its 10-10-432 dial-around product to 9.9%. The dial-around offers a minimum call length above the industry average of 3 minutes. Additionally there is a per call surcharge. So the effective rate for a 1 minute interstate call in the Continental U.S. is 77.75 cents. This is composed of the 16 cent per minute base rate, plus the per call surcharge. Be cautious, particularly if you make short calls. We suggest you find another plan. Full details can be found at: http://abtolls.com/plans/QWESTDialAround(10-10-432).html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5) Excel raises USF fees on residential plans ------------------------------------------------------------------ Excel has raised its USF fees on most residential calling plans. They are now charging a flat $1.44 a month for USF. This hits low volume users particularly hard, but may help large volume users. Links to all of the excel plans in our database can be found at: http://abtolls.com/prov.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6) Excel raises monthly fee on Dime Deal 2000 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Excel has raised the monthly fee on the Dime Deal to $3.75. The plan offers an interstate base rate of 10 cents a minute within the Continental U.S. It also has the new raised Excel flat USF fee of $1.44 added on for a monthly fee total of $5.19 prior to making any calls. Calls are billed in 1 minute increments. The intrastate rates in many states are extremely high. We urge you to check the intrastate rate for your state prior to using the service. We suggest you find another plan. Full details can be found at: http://abtolls.com/plans/ExcelDimeDeal2000.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7) Excel raises USF fee on Prime Business Flat Rate and lowers low usage penalty ------------------------------------------------------------------ Excel has raised the USF fee on its Prime Business Flat Rate plan to 7.13% - around the industry average. The plan has a monthly fee of $11.95, and offers an interstate base rate of 7 cents a minute within the Continental U.S. The monthly fee is waived if you make $50 worth of calls. Intrastate rates are rather high, we urge you to check them prior to utilizing the service. The monthly fee also drives up the effective rate, particularly for lower volume users. We suggest you find another plan. Full details can be found at: http://abtolls.com/plans/ExcelPrimeBusinessFlatRateSingleLine.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 8) New Coverage: AT&T 60 Monthly Minutes ------------------------------------------------------------------ We have initiated coverage of the AT&T 60 Monthly Minutes plan which offers an interstate base rate of 10 cents a minute within the Continental U.S. For the $5.95 monthly fee you get the first 60 minutes of interstate calling "free." This basically amounts to a plan with 10 cents a minute and a monthly minimum of 60 minutes. The plan has a USF fee of 9.9% as well and utilizes 1 minute billing. We suggest you find another plan. Details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/AT&T60MonthlyMinutes.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 9) New Coverage: MCI Select 200 ------------------------------------------------------------------ We have initiated coverage of the MCI Select 200 plans which offer an interstate base rate of 7 cents a minute within the Continental U.S. For the $9.95 monthly fee you get the first 200 minutes of either evening interstate or weekend interstate calling "free." This basically amounts to a plan with a base rate of 5 cents a minute for the first 200 minutes in the time period of choice and a minimum of 200 minutes with each additional minute charged at a base rate of 7 cents. The plan has a rather high USF fee of 12% and utilizes 1 minute billing. We suggest you find another plan. Details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/MCIWorldcomSelect200Weekends.html and http://abtolls.com/plans/MCIWorldcomSelect200Evenings.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 10) New Coverage/Warning: MCI Casual (10-10-222) ------------------------------------------------------------------ According to new information listed on the MCI Worldcom corporate website on August 1st, 2001 MCI Worldcom "Casual rates, as set forth in this paragraph below, will be charged when calls are completed over the Company's network and the caller does not have an active account with the Company. Examples of the situations when Casual rates will be charged include, but are not limited to, the following: a. If you sign up for Company service by contacting your local telephone company, but the local telephone company fails to notify the Company of your selection. b. If your local telephone company notifies the Company that you have requested cancellation of your Company service or if you have otherwise provided assurances to the Company that you have switched carriers, then the Company will cancel your service account. c. If the Company cancels your account and blocks your line from placing calls on the Company's service network for a reason described in Section V below and you have not changed carriers within 120 days of the line being blocked, the Company may lift such block and allow you access to the Company's services network. In this situation, you will be charged Casual rates for calls placed on the Company's service network. d. Casual rates will apply when you dial 1010222 before placing an interstate long distance call from a telephone that is not associated with an active account with the Company. Casual calling is billed at the following rates: Per-Minute Rate: $0.5386 Per-Call Surcharge: $3.4900 In-State Surcharge (where applicable): $3.4900" Don't let this happen to you! Find yourself another plan (any plan) at http://abtolls.com/compare/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 11) New Coverage/Warning: Sprint Casual (10-10-333) ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sprint has also released its casual caller rates on its website as of August 1st, 2001. It is also pretty ugly: Per-Minute Rate: $0.40 Per-Call Surcharge: $2.45 Again, don't let this happen to you! Find yourself any other plan at: http://abtolls.com/compare/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 12) New Coverage: Sprint Standard Weekend ------------------------------------------------------------------ This is the default plan that Sprint will put you on if you request Sprint through your local phone company and do not specifically establish a better rate plan directly with Sprint. We strongly recommend against doing this. We've added coverage of the plan to our database so you can see what you would be charged. For interstate calling in the Continental U.S. it "features" a weekday rate all day Monday-Friday of 30 cents a minute, and a weekend rate of 10 cents a minute. We suggest you find yourself another plan at http://abtolls.com/compare/ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 13) AT&T raises rates on 10 Cents Saturday Basic and 10 Cents Sunday Basic ------------------------------------------------------------------ AT&T has raised its rates on these two popular plans. During the week both plans have an interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. of 30 cents a minute during the day and 25 cents a minute during the evenings. On the weekends you get to choose either Saturday or Sunday base interstate rates of 10 cents a minute and the other day at 20 cents a minute. The plan bills in 1 minute increments with a USF of 9.9%. We suggest you find another plan. Details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/AT&T10CentsSaturdayBasic.html and http://abtolls.com/plans/AT&T10CentsSundayBasic.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 14) MCI raises evening and Saturday rates on Basic calling plan ------------------------------------------------------------------ MCI has raised the rates on its Basic calling plan. They are now charging an interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. of 30 cents on weekdays, 25 cents on weekday evenings 25 cents all day Saturday, and 10 cents on Sundays. Tack on an above average USF of 12% and 1 minute billing increments. We suggest you find another plan. Details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/MCIWorldcomBasicRates.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 15) Warning: MCI raises calling card rates ------------------------------------------------------------------ Effective September 1st customers who are still using the MCI Calling Card from the No Fee Savings Plan, International Weekends, or International Plus plans (which are no longer available to new customers) where you currently are paying a base rate of 30 cents per minute will see an increase of 63% to a new rate of 49 cents per minute. There will also now be a 49 cent connection charge per call. We do not list these calling cards in our database as they are no longer available. But you may want to shop for a stand-alone calling card. Current stand-alone calling cards in our database offer rates as low as 3.9 cents a minute. Stop wasting money. Details at: http://abtolls.com/cdayrate.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16) Warning: MCI and Sprint add $1.50 fee to all bills received through local phone company ------------------------------------------------------------------ MCI and Sprint have followed the lead of AT&T and are now charging $1.50 fee each month to receive your long distance bill on your local phone company bill. This only applies to those customers who receive calls at their location via a GFI toll free line. It DOES NOT apply to those of you that utilize GFI only for your outgoing calls. The new fee is $4.95 a month for the inbound service. Previously GFI waived this fee for high volume customers. That fee waiver is no longer applicable. Full details of the GFI plan are available at: http://abtolls.com/plans/GFI800WorldAccess.html If you are interested in seeing a comparison of inbound toll-free rate plans from dozens of providers visit: http://abtolls.com/tfeerate.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2) Isterra raises USF from 7 to 9.25% ------------------------------------------------------------------ Isterra has announced an increase in its Universal Service fee on all plans from 7% to 9.25% of interstate and international calls. The Isterra Spectra W 917 plan offers an interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. of 4.9 cents a minute, which works out to 5.35 cents a minute when taking into account the 9.25% USF. It has no monthly fee, and features 6 second billing increments with a 6 second minimum per call. In-state rates in several states are very low, including California and Connecticut (both at 3.49 cents). The plan also offers some very low international rates, including base rates from the Continental U.S. to Indonesia (27 cents) and Manilla Philippines (22 cents). Full details available at: http://abtolls.com/plans/IsterraSpectraW917.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3) Alert: AccuChat/AccuLinq Changes ------------------------------------------------------------------ There are numerous changes taking effect on the AccuChat and AccuLinq products for "Select Areas." Those customers in Alamosa, Albuquerque, Austin, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Oklahoma City, San Antonio, and San Diego that have been utilizing the AccuChat or AccuLinq local access numbers will need to change their access number as the local 7 digit access numbers will no longer be valid as of August 29th. The company has transitioned consumers in those areas to a toll free access number which you can get by visiting your online billing webpage. The dropping of the local access numbers has some positives and negatives. On the negative side AccuChat customers outside of Dallas and Fort Worth that were taking advantage of the 3.9 cents interstate and intrastate rates will see an increase to 4.9 cents if they are still in a Select Area utilizing the new definitions provided by AccuLinq. If they find themselves in a non-Select Area their rate will increase to 6.9 cents. We encourage you to verify your rate from your area prior to receiving any surprises. On the positive side, the local access rates have now become available to a much broader range of consumers. To determine if you have access to the Select Area rates you now need to verify that your area code and first 3 digits of your phone number are a valid discounted area. There are valid areas in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennesee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Not everyone in those states is eligible, but many are, and you can verify your eligibility online by looking for your area code and first 3 digits at: http://abtolls.com/accu.htm The AccuLinq Select Areas discounted rates can be quite attractive. They are not available as a direct dial service, so you will need to dial a toll free access number prior to each call. In exchange for this added hassle you can get some of the best international rates available to many countries, as well as some very attractive domestic rates. All calls in the Continental U.S. originating in a Select Area (both interstate and intrastate) have a base rate of 4.9 cents a minute with a 30 second call minimum and 6 second billing. In states such as Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Texas this is one of the lowest rates available for in-state calls. On the international front the AccuLinq Select Areas plan really shines. Some sample base rates from Select Areas include Australia (5.7 cents), Canada (4.9 cents), China (Beijing and Shanghai 9.4 cents, Other Cities 13.9 cents), France (Paris 3.9 cents, Other Cities 4.5 cents), Germany (3.9 cents), Hong Kong (4.8 cents), Italy (Rome 5.4 cents, Other Cities 6.5 cents), Japan (Osaka 7.4 cents, Tokyo 7.8 cents), South Korea (6.8 cents), Russia (Moscow 6.9 cents, St. Petersburg 7.9 cents), Spain (4.8 cents), Taiwan (Taipei 6.2 cents, Other Cities 8.9 cents), and perhaps our favorite rate - United Kingdom (2.9 cents)! If you call any of these countries we encourage you to check if you are eligible for Select Areas from AccuLinq. Keep in mind that the plan has a $1 monthly fee in any month you use the service and charges 6.68% USF on all calls, and that calls to mobile phones in certain foreign countries may have a mobile surcharge. Full details and the ability to check if your area qualifies for Select Area rates can be found at: http://abtolls.com/accu.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4) Newsletter archives ------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have found this newsletter useful, please pass it along to a friend. The plan features the lowest direct dial interstate rate in our database at 3.99 cents per minute base rate within the Continental U.S. It is only available to local phone customers of Ameritech, Bell South, Nevada Bell, Pacific Bell, Qwest, SNET, Southwestern Bell, and Verizon. The plan offers 6 second billing increments with a 6 second minimum per call. In-state rates vary by state, and if you make a lot of within state calls a different plan might be preferable for you. But if you make mostly interstate calls in the Continental U.S. you should investigate this plan. There is no monthly fee if you agree to online billing. If you prefer to receive a paper bill each month there is also no monthly fee unless you make fewer than $20 worth of calls. In months with less than $20 of calls there is a $1.99 billing charge for the paper bill. The international rates for the plan vary depending on your area, please check the RiteRateLD signup website for full details. International calls are billed in 6 second increments with a 30 second minimum, except for calls to Mexico which are billed in 1 minute increments. You can get our plan FAQ (including the link to the RiteRateLD international rates verification) on the plan at: http://abtolls.com/riterate.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2) New coverage: Access Integrated Networks ------------------------------------------------------------------ We have initiated coverage of the Access Integrated Networks plan. The plan has no monthly fee and offers 6 second billing increments with a 6 second minimum per call. One of the plan's strong points is the in-state rates for certain states that traditionally have rather high in-state rates. The plan is the lowest priced direct dial plan in our database for several in-state rates. These include Colorado, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Texas and Washington (6.5 cents a minute) among others. The other strong point of the plan is the international rates to many countries. International calls are billed in 6 second increments with a 30 second minimum per call. The plan is the lowest priced direct dial plan in our database for many countries. Additional discounts are available for calls to specific cities in certain countries. These include per minute base rates as follows: France (6.1 cents - 5.8 cents for Paris), Germany (5.5 cents - 5.2 cents for Frankfurt), Singapore (6.25 cents), Hong Kong (6.7 cents), Japan (8.5 cents), and China (9.55 cents to Beijing or Shanghai). Please note that as with many long distance plans calls to mobile phones in some other countries are much higher. Check the webpage for full details on the countries you call. Full details in our plan FAQ at: http://abtolls.com/ain.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3) New coverage: APS ------------------------------------------------------------------ We have initiated coverage of the APS 5.9 plan. The plan offers an interstate base rate of 5.9 cents within the Continental U.S. with varying intrastate rates in each state that are generally priced in the mid-range. The plan is available everywhere in the Continental U.S. except AR, MS, and VT. The plan's strongest point is its international rates to certain countries (mostly to those that normally are extremely expensive with other plans). The plan is the lowest priced direct dial plan in our database for many of those countries. Additional discounts are available for calls to specific cities in certain countries. These include per minute base rates as follows: Bosnia (28 cents), Brazil (20.9 cents), Cambodia (62.6 cents), Chad (41.7 cents), Dominican Republic (15.8 cents), Egypt (47 cents), Eritrea (73.8 cents), Ethiopia (60 cents), Honduras (42.1 cents), Jamaica (38.6 cents), Kyrgyzstan (32.1 cents), Russia (19 cents, South Africa (26.2 cents), Turkey (25.7 cents), Uzbekistan (32.2 cents), among others. Check the plan FAQ for full details: http://abtolls.com/aps.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4) New coverage: 1COM ------------------------------------------------------------------ We have initiated coverage of the 1COM 4.9 plan. The plan has no monthly fee and offers 6 second billing increments with a 6 second per call minimum. The plan offers an interstate base rate of 4.9 cents within the Continental U.S. with varying intrastate rates in each state that in many states are among the best rates in the database. Some sample leading in-state rates include California (3.5 cents), Florida (5 cents), Georgia (5 cents), Massachusetts (5 cents), and Michigan (3.5 cents). Check the plan FAQ for full details at: http://abtolls.com/1com.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5) New coverage: Univoice 4.9 ------------------------------------------------------------------ We have initiated coverage of Univance's latest plan which is called Univoice 4.9. Their older plan Univance 4.9 is still available for new customers until at least the end of the year through ABTolls and is preferable for most people over the newer plan. There are a few instances where the new plan may be preferable, so you may want to compare both based upon your calling patterns. Full details of Univoice 4.9 are at: http://abtolls.com/plans/Univoice4.9Residential.html Full details of the Univance 4.9 are at: http://abtolls.com/plans/Univance4.92001.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6) Norcom raises USF ------------------------------------------------------------------ Norcom has increased its Universal Service Fee (USF) to an industry average 6.8%. The Norcom plan has no monthly fee as long as you make the monthly minimum of $20 of calls. In months with less than $20 of calls you will be charged a $3.95 low billing fee. It offers 6 second billing with a 30 second minimum per call. It offers a flat rate of 5.9 cents a minute for both interstate and intrastate calls. It is only available to Verizon local customers in CT, MA, ME, NY, and PA, and to Bell South customers in FL. That rate of 5.9 in-state is the lowest direct dial rate in our database for New York and Pennsylvania. Full details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/Norcom5.9.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7) ECG adds new states - lowers some in-state rates ------------------------------------------------------------------ ECG has expanded its service to include all states in the Continental U.S. except for Maryland, and has lowered its in-state rates in certain states. The plan offers no monthly fee, with 6 second billing and an 18 second minimum per call. The interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. is 4.9 cents a minute with varying intrastate rates. In some states the intrastate rate is among the best in our database. For example calls within Illinois are 4 cents a minute. The plan also offers reasonable international rates to many countries. It offers the lowest direct dial base rate to the United Kingdom (5.9 cents). Full details on the plan FAQ at: http://abtolls.com/ecg.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 8) AT&T instate connection fee ------------------------------------------------------------------ We understand that AT&T has introduced a new instate connection fee in certain states. If you are a customer of AT&T please check your bill for this new fee and let us know about it! We are working on collecting data on which states are subject to this additional fee. Please e-mail us if you have any information on this fee. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 9) International mobile surcharges ------------------------------------------------------------------ The Big 3 long distance companies have all instituted an "International Mobile Surcharge" on certain calls terminating in foreign countries on a mobile phone. If you place calls to mobile phones internationally you should verify the surcharge with your particular plan. Most discounted providers have been differentiating these calls for quite some time already. The Big 3 have now done so as well. We have posted a page with direct links to the additional surcharges being charged by the Big 3 for these types of calls at: http://abtolls.com/mobile.html Please note that you must add these surcharges to the base rate of your plan to get the true cost per minute. As we work through updating the various international calling plans for the Big 3 we will include these surcharges in special mobile categories. If you call mobile phones overseas we already have built a database of mobile specific rates for many plans at: http://abtolls.com/intrates.htm The comprehensive mobile rates database has comparisons which include both the base rate and mobile surcharge into one easy to read table for calls to mobile phones in Australia, Austria, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and the U.K. More countries and long distance plans will be added over the next few months to this comprehensive comparison. We can not stress this point enough, if you call mobile phones in other countries please verify the rates with your long distance provider to avoid unwanted surprises. The surcharges can be EXTREMELY expensive. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 10) GTC modifies billing procedure ------------------------------------------------------------------ GTC has modified its billing procedures for all existing and new customers. Previously they had two options on their 5 cent a minute Continental U.S. interstate plan. The plan used to have $1.95 monthly fee which was waived if you allowed automatic billing of your credit card. They have now added the requirement that to fully waive the fee you must accept your bills online and have them paid automatically by credit card. If you wish to continue to receive a paper bill and have it paid automatically by credit card there is now a 95 cents monthly fee. Full details of the GTC plan at: http://abtolls.com/gtc.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 11) New Feature: ISP listings ------------------------------------------------------------------ Many of you have requested similar information to our comprehensive long distance rates database to compare Internet Service Providers. While this is on the list of things that we hope to add in the future, we are only 3 guys that run a cool website and have other fulltime jobs. But we want to meet your needs now and have provided a directory of internet service provider comparisons at: http://abtolls.com/compare/telecommunicationsproviders/isplists.html Please note that we can not speak to the reliability or accuracy of those lists, but they are worth checking out if you are shopping for a new ISP. If you know of any additional comprehensive comparisons please let us know! ------------------------------------------------------------------ 12) Michigan calling areas ------------------------------------------------------------------ On September 10th Michigan customers of Ameritech and Verizon had their local calling areas expanded. The Resources for Michigan Telephone Users website has placed a comprehensive list of the new local calling areas online. You can view it at: http://abtolls.com/michiganlocal.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 13) GFI raises international rates 10% ------------------------------------------------------------------ GFI has announced an international rates increase of 10% for calls to all countries. They announced this through a billing insert in last month's bill to make sure all customers were notified prior to the change taking effect. To compare rates for the countries you call, please visit: http://abtolls.com/intrates.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 14) PNG and LDDirect modify international rates ------------------------------------------------------------------ PNG and LDDirect have modified their international rate plans. If you subscribe to these plans please reverify the rates for the countries you call to avoid any unwanted surprises (pleasant or unpleasant). You can compare rates for all the countries you call at: http://abtolls.com/intrates.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 15) Newsletter archives ------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have found this newsletter useful, please pass it along to a friend. With no commitment the interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. is now 5.9 cents, with a 1 year commitment it is 4.9 cents, and with a 2 year commitment it is 4.5 cents. If you currently utilize ECG for international calls we encourage you to check on the changes to make sure you do not have any negative surprises. There may also be some positive surprises for you in terms of lowered rates in certain markets. The plan still offers some of the lowest direct dialed international rates in our database. For instance, calls to Germany are charged at a base rate of 6.97 cents a minute, France at 5.94 cents a minute, Australia at 7.66 cents a minute, and South Korea at 8.34 cents a minute. They have also lowered their Texas intrastate rate to 9.7 cents a minute. Full details at: http://abtolls.com/ecg.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 11) Telecom USA 10-10-220 and 10-10-321 adds USF of 9.9% ------------------------------------------------------------------ The popular dial-around products 10-10-220 and 10-10-321 from MCI Worldcom's Telecom USA division have announced an addition of a Universal Service Fee of 9.9% of your interstate and international calls. If you use these dial-arounds please check your bills carefully to fully understand the impact of the charges. The 10-10-220 plan offers interstate calls in the Continental U.S. at a base rate of 99 cents for the first 20 minutes. If you make a 1 minute call it is still 99 cents. With the new USF the true costs works out to $1.09. Each additional minute over the initial 20 is charged at a base rate of 7 cents a minute, or 7.69 with USF included. Details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/MCIWorldcomTelecomUSA(10-10-220).html The 10-10-321 plan offers interstate calls in the Continental U.S. at a base rate of 18 cents a minute for calls 10 minutes and less and gives a 50% discount on calls over 10 minutes. With the USF this rate works out to 19.78 cents a minute. Details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/MCIWorldcomTelecomUSA(10-10-321).html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 12) USF increases coming in January - watch your bills ------------------------------------------------------------------ We have heard that most carriers will be raising their Universal Service Fee (USF) starting January 1st, 2002. Please keep an eye on your bills to figure out what you are truly paying for this carrier specific fee. Each carrier can charge whatever it likes on this fee, and thus is a way to drive up the cost of your call without being as obvious as increasing the base rate. USF fees vary wildly from carrier to carrier. All rates listed in our database include this carrier specific fee so you can compare apples to apples. Let us start off by apologizing for the long silence for the past two months on the newsletter front. The company we were using to operate the newsletter (listbot) has decided to stop providing the service to the internet community. So we have been working on getting the newsletter list transitioned to a new system. We have now completed the transition, and are ready to update you on everything for the past 2 months! A lot of updates! You might also notice a new look and feel to the website. Justin has been hard at work redesigning the pages taking into account a lot of your feedback. The 3 of us have also been working diligently on transitioning the backend of our database to a new database system that promises to make many new features possible shortly - stay tuned, as there are exciting new features coming VERY soon! --------------------------- In this newsletter --------------------------- 1) Univance lowers rates (interstate and intrastate in some states) and ups USF 2) New rate plan from Isterra - very low rates in certain markets 3) Interstate rate drops on all Isterra plans, monthly fee added. 4) Sprint raises USF from 9.6 to 9.9% and adds new "Property Tax Recovery Fee" 5) ATN raises USF 6) ATN raises rates to mobile phones in certain countries 7) Excel Telco 10-10-457 raises USF and adds per call surcharge 8) Excel Telco 10-10-297 raises USF and adds per call surcharge 9) AT&T Lucky Dog 10-10-345 raises per call surcharge 10)MCI Worldcom Telecom USA 10-10-321 raises rates 11)Two new MCI Worldcom plans: "12 cents" and "All Week" 12)10-10-432 raises rates and increases minimum 13)AT&T raises basic rates 14)Tell a friend about ABTolls - you can win $10,000 and other prizes 15)Newsletter archives +------------------------------------------------------------------+ Discounted European Rail Passes: http://flyaow.com/raileurope.htm +------------------------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 1)Univance lowers rates (interstate and intrastate in some states) and ups USF ------------------------------------------------------------------ Univance has announced a new lower rate plan which now offers interstate base rates in the Continental U.S. of 4.9 cents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The plan also features some lower intrastate rates in certain states as well compared with their previous plans. Each call has a 30 second minimum with 6 second billing after that. The plan has a USF fee slightly above industry average of 8.25% and a monthly fee of $3.00. The plan is only available if your local phone service is provided by a Regional Bell Operating Company. Some excellent international rates are available on the plan as well, such as a base rate of 9.9 cents a minute to Japan, 7.9 cents a minute to Germany, 6.9 cents a minute to France, and 52.9 cents to India. Please note that calls to mobile phones in certain countries have very high surcharges though. Full details available at: http://abtolls.com/plans/Univance4.9.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 2)New rate plan from Isterra - very low rates in certain markets ------------------------------------------------------------------ Isterra has released a new rate plan that offers some extremely low rates in certain markets. It features an interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. of 4.9 cents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each call has only a 6 second minimum, with 6 second billing increments after that. There is an average USF fee of 7%, and a monthly fee of $2.00. They have just announced that once your account is established you can get the monthly fee of $2.00 waived by signing up for online billing. Some of the very attractive pricing for the plan includes calls within California for 3.49 cents a minute, and calls within Connecticut for 3.49 cents a minute. On the international front it offers some excellent rates to certain markets, such as a base rate of 8 cents a minute to Austria, 23 cents a minute to China, 24 cents to the Philippines, and 9 cents a minute to Singapore. Please note that calls to mobile phones in certain countries have very high surcharges. Full details available at: http://abtolls.com/plans/IsterraSpectraW917.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 3)Interstate rate drops on all Isterra plans, monthly fee added. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Isterra also announced a drop in interstate base rates on its previous rate plans to 4.9 cents while adding a $2.00 monthly fee. They just recently announced that you can get the $2.00 fee waived by agreeing to online billing. If you are an existing customer of Isterra we recommend you verify your current rate plan with them and check to see if the rates can be lowered to 4.9 interstate base. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4)Sprint raises USF from 9.6 to 9.9% and adds new "Property Tax Recovery Fee" ------------------------------------------------------------------ Sprint has announced an increase in its USF fee from 9.6% to 9.9% and also has added a new carrier specific fee called "Property Tax Recovery Fee." As far as we know Sprint is the only carrier currently charging this fee, and we have been unable to get a good answer as to what it is supposed to cover. We have upped the carrier specific percentage charge for all Sprint plans in our database to 10.98% to take into account this additional 1.08% fee. Please check your Sprint bills carefully for any new fees, and we encourage you to inquire with Sprint customer service about the reason behind the fees. If you get any interesting information on them, please do let us know via e-mail! ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5)ATN raises USF ------------------------------------------------------------------ ATN has announced an increase in its USF fee to an above industry average 12%. Their plan still has only an 18 second minimum call length and 6 second billing increments along with no monthly fee and an interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. of 6.9 cents a minute 24 hours a day. The biggest attraction of their plan in our eyes is the no monthly fee calling card which has an interstate base rate of 14.9 cents a minute. It is a good card to keep for emergencies as you only get billed for usage. Full details available at: http://abtolls.com/plans/ATNTTIULTRAcallResidential.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6)ATN raises rates to mobile phones in certain countries ------------------------------------------------------------------ We have received reports that ATN has followed the lead of many other companies and increased rates to mobile phones in certain countries. We are working on confirming their current rates to mobile phones internationally and will update the database with new information shortly. We encourage current ATN customers that make calls to mobile phones in other countries to verify your rates directly with ATN customer service prior to making any additional calls. +------------------------------------------------------------------+ Last minute INTERNET ONLY airline ticket DISCOUNTS http://flyaow.com/hotwire.htm Some recent fares booked: New York-LA $204, SF-Chicago $208 +------------------------------------------------------------------+ ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7)Excel Telco 10-10-457 raises USF and adds per call surcharge ------------------------------------------------------------------ Excel Telco's 10-10-457 dial-around has raised its USF fee to a flat fee of $1.12 per month. The plan is loaded with additional fees including a 15 cents per call surcharge for domestic calls, and a 40 cent per call surcharge for international calls. Each call has a minimum call length of 5 minutes as well, with 1 minute billing after the first 5 minutes. So if you make a single domestic interstate call during the day for 1 minute at the advertised rate of 10 cents per minute your bill will actually be 50 cents for the 5 minute minimum, plus 15 cents for the per call surcharge, plus $1.12 for the monthly USF fee for a grand total of $1.77 for the call. Full details of the plan available at: http://abtolls.com/plans/ExcelTelcoDial&Save-(10-10-457).html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 8)Excel Telco 10-10-297 raises USF and adds per call surcharge ------------------------------------------------------------------ Excel Telco's 10-10-297 dial-around has also raised its fees similar to the 10-10-497 plan. They now have a flat USF fee of $1.12 per month, a 15 cents per call surcharge for domestic calls, and a 40 cent per call surcharge for international calls. Each call is billed in 1 minute increments. So a single domestic interstate call anytime of day for 1 minute at the advertised rate of 10 cents per minute will result in a bill of 10 cents for the 1 minute, 15 cents surcharge for the call, plus $1.12 for the monthly USF fee for a grand total of $1.37 for the call. Full details of the plan available at: http://abtolls.com/plans/ExcelTelcoChoiceDialaround-(10-10-297).html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 9)AT&T Lucky Dog 10-10-345 raises per call surcharge ------------------------------------------------------------------ AT&T's Lucky Dog 10-10-345 dial-around has raised its per call surcharge to 15 cents per call. The plan has 1 minute billing increments, and 10 cents per minute interstate base rate. They claim to have no USF fees and only to charge taxes on top of the calling volume and per call surcharges. If you have used the 10-10-345 dial-around recently, please let us know if you did in fact not receive a charge for USF in the tax and other fees portion of your bill. Full details available at: http://abtolls.com/plans/AT&TLuckyDog(10-10-345).html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 10)MCI Worldcom Telecom USA 10-10-321 raises rates ------------------------------------------------------------------ MCI Worldcom has raised the rates on its 10-10-321 program to 18 cents a minute for interstate calls in the Continental U.S. under 10 minutes. Calls over 10 minutes now have a base rate of 9 cents a minute. Prices for calls within your state vary, and tend towards the high side. Full details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/MCIWorldcomTelecomUSA(10-10-321).html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 11)Two new MCI Worldcom plans: "12 cents" and "All Week" ------------------------------------------------------------------ MCI Worldcom has announced 2 new rate plans. MCIWorldcom Twelve Cents Anytime offers a base interstate rate in the Continental U.S. of 12 cents a minute 24 hours a day with a $5 monthly minimum usage. It has an above industry average USF of 12%. Calls within the state tend towards the high side with the majority of states having rates of either 10 or 14 cents a minute. The MCIWorldcom All Week plan offers an interstate base rate in the Continental U.S. of 10 cents a minute during weekdays and 5 cents a minute weekday evenings and weekends. There is a $4.95 monthly fee, and calls are billed in full minute increments. Within state rates in most states are rather high, with many states have an in-state rate of either 10 or 14 cents. The plan also has an above industry average USF of 12%, which is also charged on the monthly fee. Full details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/MCIWorldcomTwelveCentsAnytime.html http://abtolls.com/plans/MCIWorldcomAllWeek.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 12)10-10-432 raises rates and increases minimum ------------------------------------------------------------------ Qwest's 10-10-432 dial-around has raised rates to 16 cents per minute for interstate calls in the Continental U.S. There is a 3 minute minimum per call, and a USF of 8.3%, as well as a per call surcharge of 25 cents. We have heard that the USF will be raised to 9.9% shortly, and we are awaiting confirmation of this. Full details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/QWESTDialAround(10-10-432).html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 13)AT&T raises basic rates ------------------------------------------------------------------ AT&T has raised its rates on the Basic Rate Plan. The AT&T Basic Rate plan is what many senior citizens still utilize. If you never changed your long distance service after deregulation there is a good chance you are on this rate plan. Also, if you casually dial the AT&T dial-around code of 10-10-288 there is a good chance you will get rates from the Basic Rate plan. The new rates are 30 cents a minute during weekdays, 25 cents a minute weekday evenings, and 16 cents a minute all weekend. There is a 9.9% USF charge as well. Details at: http://abtolls.com/plans/AT&TBasicRates.html ------------------------------------------------------------------ 14) Tell a friend about ABTolls - you can win $10,000 and other prizes ------------------------------------------------------------------ Recommend-It is offering users of ABTolls an opportunity to win $10,000 and other prizes, by telling your friends about ABTolls. The plan has no monthly fee and offers 6 second billing increments with an 18 second per call minimum. Please note that as with many long distance plans calls to mobile phones in some other countries are much higher. Check the webpage for full details on the countries you call.
